Abstract: Based on Nock’s (2009) integrated model, the current study established a moderated mediation model to explore the underlying mechanism of self-criticism on adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior. A total of 914 middle school students anonymously completed questionnaires assessing self-criticism, psychache, cognitive reappraisal, and NSSI. Among them, 331 teenagers reported a history of NSSI behavior, and were entered into analysis. Results showed that after controlling for gender and single-child status, self-criticism was positively associated with adolescent NSSI, and this association was mediated by psychache. Cognitive reappraisal moderated the mediation effect of psychache in the relationship between self-criticism and NSSI. Specifically, cognitive reappraisal buffered the impact of self-criticism on psychache, which further weakened the indirect effect of self-criticism on NSSI.

Key words: self-criticism, non-suicidal self-injury, psychache, cognitive reappraisal, adolescent
