Abstract: The present study aimed to explore the mediating effect of coping style on the relationship between dormitory interpersonal relationship and depression, and the moderating effect of gender on the mediating model. A total of 876 college students from three universities in Wuhan were selected by cluster random sampling method, and completed dormitory interpersonal relationship questionnaire, depression scale and dormitory conflict coping style questionnaire. The results indicated that:(1) the dormitory interpersonal relationship significantly negatively correlated with depression; competition and avoidance significantly positively correlated with depression; while cooperation significantly negatively correlated with depression, and compliance didn't correlate with depression significantly. (2) the mediating effects of competition and cooperation on the relation between dormitory interpersonal relationship and depression were significant. (3) Gender moderated the first half mediate path through competition, and this indirect effect was much stronger among boys than among girls. Results highlight the importance of both college students' dormitory interpersonal relationship and positive coping style when considering the prevention and intervention of college students' depression.
