Self-presentation in Online Social Network Sites and Adolescent Online Altruistic Behavior: The Role of Online Social Self-efficacy and Hope

Abstract: The present study examined the effect of self-presentation in SNS (Social Network Site) on adolescent online altruistic behavior as well as the mediation effects of online social self-efficacy and hope. A sample of 805 eight-grade students (53.04% males; Mage=13.38 years, SD=0.63) from Anhui, Fujian, Henan, Hunan, Shanxi, Tianjin, Yunnan Provinces completed Questionnaire of Self-presentation in SNS, Online Altruistic Behavior Scale, Questionnaire of Online Social Self-efficacy and Hope scale. The results revealed that:(1) Both positive and honest self-presentation in SNS positively predicted adolescent online altruistic behavior; (2) Online social self-efficacy mediated the relationship between positive self-presentation and online altruistic behavior, and the relationship between honest self-presentation and online altruistic behavior; (3) Hope mediated the relationship between honest self-presentation and online altruistic behavior.
