Abstract: This study investigated the relationship between parent involvement and students' school engagement among 4160 students from 12 elementary and secondary schools in Beijing. The roles of autonomy-supportive/controlling parenting style as well as students' psychological need satisfaction in academic activities in this relationship were investigated and analyzed by hierarchical regression analysis. The study found that:(1) parent involvement decreased with the increase of students' grades;(2) parents involved more in the aspect of tutoring at home but less in collaborating with school and community;(3) parent involvement positively predicted students' school engagement;(4) the autonomy-supportive/controlling parenting style moderated the relationship between parent involvement and students' school engagement, and this moderated relationship was mediated partly by students' psychological need satisfaction in academic activities.

Key words: parent involvement, school engagement, psychological need satisfaction in academic activities, autonomy-supportive/controlling parenting style, elementary and middle school students
