Development of Chinese Children’s Early Word Awareness

Abstract: The present study discussed acquisition of Chinese young children's word and syllable awareness and the age differences.The participants aged from 4-to 6-year-old were asked to repeat a last word or sound in sentence task and story task and to circle one word or sound which experimenter said on the script.The results showed that: (1) 4-year-old children's correct responses were under 50% in word awareness and syllable awareness tasks,and the same as 5-year-olds in word awareness task.(2) 6-year-old children made correct responses over 90%.(3) all children's performance was much better in syllable awareness task than in word awareness task.
